Location in the Caucasus

Description

The Baku Funicular rises in three minutes from the Caspian Boulevard to Baku Park, the elevated garden that overlooks the city from the hill. The gondolas are modern and the ride is short, but the views during the ascent are worth it: the Caspian bay in the background, the Icheri Sheher to the left, the Flame Towers to the right and the Boulevard below become increasingly recognisable as a panorama as you climb.

At the top, Baku Park has gardens, walkways and the best photo vantage points in the city. From here you can see the Flame Towers with no buildings interrupting the skyline, the sea beyond and the curve of the Absheron coastline. At sunset, lateral light falls directly on the tower facades and the bay turns golden. There are benches, cafés and Azerbaijani families who use the park regularly.

The return ticket costs 2 manat (about 1.20 EUR). It operates every day. It is one of the few urban cable cars with this view in the Caucasus and the stop is worth it even if your time in the park is brief.

History

Baku Park has existed since the Soviet era as a green space on the hilltop above the Boulevard. The funicular was built to ease access for residents of the upper neighbourhoods to the centre and the coast. The current installation is modern with gondolas renovated in recent decades. The park gained importance as a tourist viewpoint especially after the Boulevard renovation works and the construction of the Flame Towers, which made the panorama from above particularly recognisable.

What to see & do

  • Funicular gondolas The ascent takes about 3 minutes. The gondolas have wide windows on both sides; for the best views over the bay, position yourself on the Caspian side.
  • Baku Park panorama The most comprehensive viewpoint over the city: the bay, the Flame Towers, the historic centre and the hills to the north. The best moment is between one hour before sunset and half an hour after.
  • Martyrs' Memorial Near the upper station, the memorial to the victims of Black January 1990 with eternal flames and a view over the bay. One of the most visited places by local Azerbaijanis.

How to get there

The lower station of the Baku Funicular is on the Caspian Boulevard, near the Maiden Tower. You can walk from the Icheri Sheher in 10 minutes, or take the metro to Icheri Sheher station (red line). Bolt from the centre costs 2–3 manat.

Best time to visit

The funicular runs year-round. Sunset and the following hour are the best time for views over the bay — especially in spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) when the light is softer. In summer the heat at the top of the park is intense at midday.
