Tbilisis Sioni

Siguiendo la tradición georgiana medieval de nombrar iglesias según lugares míticos de Tierra Santa, la Catedral de Sioni lleva el nombre de Monte Sión en Jerusalén. Esta concurrida iglesia fue construida inicialmente en los siglos VI y VII. Desde entonces, ha sido destruida y pillada por invasores extranjeros y reconstruida varias veces. La iglesia actual se basa en una versión del siglo XIII con algunos cambios entre los siglos XVII y XIX. La Catedral de Sioni fue la principal catedral ortodoxa de Georgia y la sede del Patriarca de Georgia hasta que le tomó el relevo en 2004 la Catedral de la Santísima Trinidad.
